Staying at Southport Private

The Southport Private Hospital has 19 private single rooms, all with ensuite facilities and 5 suites which provide additional space and facilities.

Each patient is allocated a Nurse each shift who will coordinate your inpatient care. Whilst in the clinic your treating Psychiatrist will visit regularly.

You are encouraged to wear comfortable, casual clothes while in the Hospital and are requested not to wear night attire out of the Unit. It is important that foot wear is worn at all times whilst at the Hospital.

We encourage family members to be involved in care planning and evaluation. We recognise and appreciate the valuable role of carers in supporting a patient’s recovery.

An experienced catering team provides a variety of healthy meals. All meals are prepared on site daily. We are able to accommodate special dietary requirements and ask that you discuss this matter with nursing staff.

A closed circuit television (CCTV) system is installed throughout the Hospital to assist in the maintenance of a safe and secure environment for all patients, visitors and staff. Footage will only be accessed by persons authorised to do so.

You are welcome to bring electrical items to The Southport Private Hospital which will make your stay more comfortable for example iPods, iPads, laptops, radios, mobile phone and chargers, hairdryers, electric razors.

You are asked to limit the amount of items you have in your room and Ramsay Health will accept no responsibility for the safekeeping of these items. You are also asked to respect the privacy of other patients when it comes to items which contain a camera or recording facilities.

A gymnasium is available for all patients. Medical clearance from a medical officer is required to utilise this facility, as well as a waiver that you must complete prior to using the gymnasium. Please see the nursing staff if you would like to use the gym equipment during your stay. Safe operating procedures have been developed for all gym equipment. This information is displayed in the gym.

Housekeeping operates between 6.30am-8pm. The overall therapeutic approach includes responsibility for making your own bed and keeping your room and bathroom tidy and free of rubbish if you are physically able to do so. Clean linen is provided once a week; please help yourself from the various clean linen cupboards.

Hot and cold drinks are available in the kitchenettes in each unit.

Nursing staff have access to a broad range of videos, board games, puzzles, etc. and encourage patients to participate in such leisure activities each evening and over the weekend.

The patient lounges are available for social interaction, games and watching TV outside of therapy time. Foxtel is available in the lounges and in each bedroom.

Mail and flowers are delivered directly to your room. If you have mail to post please affix a stamp and give it to the front reception staff.

Should you have any maintenance issues with your room during your stay at the hospital please discuss with the nursing staff who can report these issues to the maintenance department.

When you are admitted please ask our staff if mobiles can be used in your room. Mobiles may be used in all public areas including the coffee shop. The Southport Private Hospital does not accept any responsibility for loss or damage to your mobile phone.

Patients are not permitted to drive a vehicle whilst an inpatient. Please hand your keys to nursing staff who will secure them for the duration of your admission. Patients are not to drive whilst on any period of day leave from the hospital.

Your unit is staffed by a multidisciplinary health care team consisting of:

  • Credentialed Psychiatrist
  • Medical Officer
  • Mental Health Nurses
  • Psychologist
  • Dietician
  • Social Worker

Newspapers are delivered to the units on a daily basis. They can be found at the Nurses’ Stations.

The Southport Private Hospital external doors are locked at 11pm and reopened at approximately 5:00am. Nightly building security checks are conducted by a contracted security agency. A duress alarm system is installed throughout the hospital to assist in the maintenance of a safe and secure environment for all patients, visitors and staff.

No alcohol is to be brought into the hospital or consumed at any time whilst you are a client of The Southport Private Hospital. Non adherence to this policy may result in your immediate discharge.

In accordance with the Queensland Department of Health from the 1st January 2015 smoking is banned at all health care facilities and for 5 meters beyond the facility boundary. The Southport Private Hospital can provide information and tailored quit smoking assistance and support. Please note, for your security, the main doors will not be opened between 11.00pm to 5.00am.

There are telephones provided in each room to make and receive calls. All local calls (within approx. 25km) are free of charge, courtesy of The Southport Private Hospital.

Televisions in all bedrooms have Foxtel available. There is also a television with Foxtel and a DVD player in the lounge area of the Unit.

We recommend that you do not bring large amounts of money or valuable items with you to the hospital. The hospital does not accept liability for lost, stolen or damaged personal items, valuables or money.

You are welcome to receive visitors however, please ensure that your visitors do not visit during group program session times. Children must be directly supervised by visitors at all times. Visiting hours are 4:00pm to 8:00pm during the week and 10:00am to 8:00pm on weekends. For visiting outside of these times please discuss with the nursing staff. There is ample parking on the property for visitors. All visitors are asked to please check in at the nurses’ station upon arrival.
